People have asked me to post pictures of the yard before the transformation. Here are before pictures of front and back yard, pictures of transition from beginning to current yard, and current pictures. They are only in semi-order. Spring, summer, and fall are all represented. Also included are the multiple transformations of front yard, as we had to move things around after the first summer. We stuck all kinds of things in the first year, only to find that we had tall in front of short, things that spread too much, etc. Mom and I tend to grow different flowers and it took a couple of years to mesh our styles.
I’m swamped with the yard this week. The sweet peas fell over in the wind. The roses are covered with deadheads. The bee balm has powdery mildew. Everything needs staking up. I need to hack back some flowers that have used themselves up. If mom even MENTIONS getting more flowers I’m going to threaten her with a trowel.
I can’t adequately describe the paradise you created out of a small plain yard.
One of these days I’m finally going to get to create a yard on my OWN property instead of dolling up yet another rental.
pfffft @ you bending over
That’s mom. My butt is WAY bigger than that.
I don’t know what , in these, pics reminded me… except perhaps thinking about how much gardens are a part of all of our family life-
Do you remember when we got caught digging a lake ( with an island in the center ) in the middle of the vegetable patch?
I remember how we laid the hose back aways so it’s stream looked like a real creek , the lake was almost full enough to float the raft we made for our dolls to go camping on, the dump truck had done it’s work and was parked on the top of a muddy mound…
Do you remember how long we got grounded that time?
See, I told you two that you were mean sisters! I NEVER got invited to this garden party in the vegie patch.
Yes, that is one of my strong early childhood memories. I think we started out building a campground for the dolls, but, inspired by the Lewiston Dam being built, we decided to add a lake and earthen dam. It was quite large and deep, thus the grounding. Martha, you were probably nearby stuffing your face with strawberries. 4 year olds just get in the way of lake building.
And my excavation in the back yard pics above is probably what reminded you.
MUnak lil sis was taking a nap… in the house.
Too young for lake building.
And we really were kinda jealous about sharing our lil beater toy dump truck with anyone- dang boys in the area were always trying to make off with it…
And that was US stuffing our faces with strawberries WAS lil sis…
And wondering why god sounded just like dad when the skies boomed out with “Pick, don’t eat em! They’re for the whole family!”
Took me the longest time to figure out dad could see us from that lil window up high in the back of the house and would crack the window to admonish us…
When you get your own place make sure there is abundant water. I went out to mow and trim the trees along my driveway, only to find out that my garden tractor wouldn’t go into gear. so I came back to visit your beautiful flowers and cake. I feel better now, even though my beloved riding mower appears to be broken.
